Intent

In our department, we aim to encourage students in KS3 to express their creativity and innovation. We want them to explore a variety of tools and materials, both traditional and modern, in a safe and controlled setting. We believe that making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process and that students learn best by trying new things. Our goal is to help students develop an understanding of real-life problems in different situations and to consider their own and others' needs, wants, and values. We strive to equip students with technical and practical skills, as well as essential soft skills that can be applied in everyday life.

At Hawkley Hall High School, the Design Technology curriculum is designed to teach students the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to follow an iterative design process. This process involves exploring, creating through making, and evaluating designs. By studying Design Technology, students will gain the tools they need to make a positive impact on their world.

In Design Technology lessons, students will learn techniques for creating and manufacturing products and systems. They will also learn how to be innovative and effectively use a variety of resources, both traditional and digital, to improve their environment and everyday lives. Through this, they will develop the skills necessary to make a difference in their world.

Across different areas of Design Technology, students will use a range of tools and equipment to learn new competences specific to each subject and content area. By covering a wide range of topics, students will gain expertise in various disciplines, including mathematics, science and engineering.

Students are encouraged to be daring and demonstrate resourcefulness, innovation, and creativity while considering their own and others' needs, wants, and values. By studying the history and current state of Design Technology, students will gain a deeper understanding of its influence on everyday life and the world around them.
